B.R.Oil Pipeline Facility Concept Art

Let’s take a look at some concept art of the environment you’ll fight through in the first chapter in Dudebro II.

Oil Pipeline Facility

Here’s a zoomed-out view of the compound that Dudebro must infiltrate to find a member of the infamous Dude Squad. It looks fairly simple from a distance, but Dudebro will have to venture inside…

This location is seemingly swarming with SkullPro soldiers… is Dudebro a bad enough dude to stop them? Of course he is.

John Dudebro

John DudebroJohn Dudebro is the main protagonist of Dudebro II and its nonexistent prequels. He’s the dude every bro wants to be. His exaggerated muscles coupled with his overall badassery, and the charming combination of half tuck and tie, make him irresistible to women. He secretly wears space marine armor under his shirt, hidden below his muscles.

His current age is unknown but he is said to be quite old, as he has fought in World War II. “Multiple times”, at least according to him. After decades of protecting his country, Dudebro retired to a quiet life with a new group of bros. But his calling had always lain on the battlefield.

Needless to say, he was quietly ecstatic to be called back to service with the B.R.O. Alliance soldier Piston Sledge. After completing more adventures in typical bro fashion, Dudebro would go on to form a partnership with rookie soldier Habemus Chicken. The two have been inseparable ever since.

Sure, we’re inseparable until he picks up all the chicks at parties and leaves without telling me …

— Habemus Chicken

Now, Dudebro faces one of his toughest challenges yet, as the private terrorist organization SkullPro threatens to ruin the world’s brodiocity and he’s the only one with the skills — and the gonads — to stop it.

Basic Gameplay

So just what kind of game is Dudebro II?

Dudebro II is a 2D side-scrolling shooter that utilizes retro pixel art blended with modern features, such as advanced physics and shader effects. Movement and actions are all controlled with the keyboard or a game controller. These actions include shooting, slicing, changing weapons, picking up objects, throwing objects, and more.

What’s with all this computer terminology? If a keyboard can’t order me a drink, what use is it?

— General Dawgless Lee

There is a degree of exploration that is vital to advancing the game. Progression is tied to the weapons and upgrades Dudebro comes across on his mission, allowing for a non-linear adventure with plenty of variety.

Another important aspect is the Brodiocity Meter. This gauge essentially works as a health bar, but it’s a bit more versatile than that. The meter will go down when damaged, but it can increase in a variety of ways. The bar will go up whenever Dudebro acts like a bro, which includes killing an enemy, drinking a beer or rescuing a lady.

Are you saying Dudebro doesn’t act like a bro all the time? What kind of bullshit are you feeding these people?

— General Dawgless Lee

A nice little extra feature are the Medals. Scattered throughout the game world, they act as prizes for specific accomplishments such as finding hidden paths or completing platforming challenges and shootouts, and gathering a certain amount will be needed to access each chapter’s boss fight.

The origins of the Dudebro II project

Monday, June 14th, 2010

On December 7, 2009, on a video game forum from the dark depths of the Internet, user Cuyahoga started a thread titled “So I decided to rent Imagine: Babyz Fashion…”

It didn’t start out so well.

After user Arpharmd B accused him of being a pedophile, Cuyahoga responded by saying, “So, I’m a pedophile because I don’t want to play Dudebro, My Shit is Fucked Up So I Got to Shoot/Slice You II: It’s Straight-Up Dawg Time? To throw around these sort of accusations at someone who seeks to do something different suggests quite the insecurity on your part.”

DudebroThe title caught everyone’s attention immediately. After a bit of discussion about it and user [Nintex] mocked up a fake game cover, users Jocchan and Thetrin took the concept to the next level by doing a piece of concept art and writing an opening cutscene, respectively. Once user Mik2121 made a 3D model of the main character based on Jocchan’s art, Dudebro was no longer a simple “meme.” Things took off from there, with more than 100 volunteers joining to work on the project within weeks of its conception.

Dudebro II is a 2D side-scrolling shooter parodying dudebro-style games, gamers and game makers. It is a satirical commentary on the industry as a whole and its reliance on sequels and violent, action-heavy titles starring macho protagonists and overly sexualized women. The game’s protagonist, John Dudebro, will be portrayed by Jon St. John, who is known for his work as the voice of Duke Nukem.*

And why is there a number two in its title? Because it’s the sequel to a fictional game — after all, everyone knows that sequels are better than original IPs in the gaming industry.
